Disney Movie Zenon! The one thing I love about moving into Los Angeles could be the number of revival houses and single screen cinemas you can still visit. I'm not discussing your multiplexes which might be playing the newest Hollywood blockbusters, I'm speaking about those historic movie theaters that play in the classic movies we loved watching whenever we were maturing. Many of these films we first watched in the news or rented them on VHS from your local video stores (back when they existed), but we never got a chance to see them on the big screen where they belonged. But because of places like New Beverly Cinema, the Egyptian Theatre and Grauman's Chinese among other movie theatres, we finally get to obtain them the way they were intended to be seen.
Now I know lots of people who these days would prefer to curl up about the sofa and view movies at home, however, these cult movies need to be seen on the big screen should you be ever in Los Angeles.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
This musical comedy horror cult classic which stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick and also the great Tim Curry as a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" could be the longest-running midnight movie ever. Thirty-eight years after "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" arrived on the scene, it is playing in limited release and midnight screenings keep taking place all over America. However, you haven't lived til you have seen this movie with the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica where audience members can dress up as their superheroes and talk to the screen in a way they couldn't if the were another movie. Fans at the Nuart go for treated to your live performance from Sins O' The Flesh, several actors that perform combined with movie every Saturday night. You can always rely on having a most fantastic time whenever you watch this movie with the Nuart!
"The Room"
The 2003 romantic drama which was written, produced, directed and stars Tommy "YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA!" Wiseau has been called one of several worst films ever made, and also the fans still can't get enough of it. "The Room" is constantly on the sell out midnight screenings with the Regent Theatre in Los Angeles, and it is possible to always trust Wiseau being there to accomplish a Q&A session with the fans. Audience members come dressed as their favorite characters, one scene has them throwing plastic spoons with the screen, they will toss footballs to one another during the movie, and they yell out insults about the undeniably sub-standard of the film. There are so many things wrong with "The Room," yet it is so enjoyable to watch having an audience.
"The Big Lebowski"
Joel and Ethan Coen followed up their masterpiece "Fargo" using this type of dark comedy starring Jeff Bridges as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. The movie was a box office disappointment, nonetheless it has since garnered among the biggest and strangest cult followings of the movie ever made thanks to the main character's unapologetically laid back attitude. Screenings of "The Big Lebowski" are available at various Los Angeles movie theatres, though the real treat for fans is when the Lebowski Fest concerns town. The recent Lebowski Fest held on the Saban Theater and Fountain Bowl featured a night of unlimited bowling in addition to various trivia contests. There was even a performance by The Kyle Gass Band which featured an exclusive guest appearance by Jack Black as Evil Elvis. Oh yeah, they did show the movie there at the same time.
"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
What "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is always to the Nuart Theatre, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" has quickly become to New Beverly Cinema. The still standing Los Angeles repertory revival house was the first to show Edgar Wright's film following your end of the theatrical run, and possesses since taken up a permanent midnight residence alongside "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Wright, that has hosted several movie programs at the New Beverly, turns up at "Scott Pilgrim" screenings to answer questions through the audience, and he has brought as well as him several with the film's stars including Michael Cera. Recently, Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played Ramona, your ex of Scott Pilgrim's dreams, came through the New Beverly to introduce it on the excited audience there. I make no apologies for naming "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" as my favorite movie of 2010.
"Big Trouble in Little China"
Every Los Angeles screening I have witnessed of John Carpenter's martial arts training comedy has always led to a sold-out audience. Thanks to home video, "Big Trouble in Little China" gained a huge cult following, and audiences find it irresistible today you might say that you wished they did back when it first arrived on the scene. It's this type of kick to observe this film having an audience because they are in hysterics over Kurt Russell delivering his dialogue by having an unapologetic John Wayne swagger, and we have long since accepted the fact that his character of Jack Burton is a lot more of a blowhard than the usual hero. It doesn't matter how many times you have witnessed this movie; "Big Trouble in Little China" is still a blast to find out through.
