Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, for the most part, not just a new display. It is a very similar as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.
Still, that may not be a trival new feature. After all, the press announcements say Thunderbolt could be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this system is worth a closer inspection.
Apple's new Thunderbolt display may well not offer a lot regarding new display panel technology, but that does not mean it is behind the days or without quality. Besides simply being big, it includes everything that most users may want. LED backlighting permits more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and better black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology permits vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to include some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" brand from this new service, it would still apply. This is a monitor that's geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos as well as video games. The use of high-gloss glass instead of a matte surface is proof that. MacBook Airs, as an example, don't possess Ethernet available at the same time an option, but can use an Ethernet connection via this display.
What's lacking is, needless to say, HDMI and DVI. The deficiency of USB 3.0 ports is also a downer, though many competitors haven't yet offer USB 3.0 at the same time. The connections available on the Thunderbolt display is smart if you are connecting it to a Mac, but if you aren't, it is going to seem rather limited.
The speakers for this display really are a 2.1 system which gives reasonably adequate sound. However, like every single built-in monitor sound system ever made, the deficiency of proper sound staging limits enjoyment. There's no question that the Thunderbolt display, such as the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, comes with a top-notch viewing experience. Apple hasn't skimped on display technology, and even though the glossy glass panel may be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in ideal lighting.
It's a waste, then, that this display is average by every other measure. Limited connectivity and a deficiency of ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind built to be just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for sale, you might grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for similar dough.
Given poor people value, it's impossible to rate this product as anything better than average despite the excellent image quality. The main reason to get this display is not because it's the best value but instead because you own a Mac already, and you want to stay within the confines of Apple's ecosystem.
